General facts

Hachiman Hikigaya

⇒⇒ 💖

💖

Yukino Yukinoshita

The relationship between Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita develops sluggishly during the anime.

At the beginning of the anime, Hachiman Hikigaya is sort of forced by his teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka to join the Service-Club, where he meets Yukino Yukinoshita.
They can not stand each other and are ice cold to each other.
They stay at a distance and often tease each other.

However, later on, of course, they have their moments together from time to time and you notice that they slowly get along with one another.
But it’s not really noticeable that they get closer to each other.

Hachiman Hikigaya always manages to solve problems with his more or less clever ideas.
In the process, he also helps Yukino Yukinoshita out of trouble several times.
As a result, she gains a little more affection for Hachiman Hikigaya as the anime progresses.
However, unfortunately, she continues to remain at a distance from Hachiman Hikigaya until the end of the anime, when they both finally express their feelings.

Kakeru Tobe

⇒⇒ 💔 ⨯⨯

💔

Hina Ebina

Kakeru Tobe is a very cheerful person and also a bit crazy, in a positive way.
Hina Ebina also has her quirks, but both seem to get along very well.

However, he has a crush on her.

So at some point he asks the Service-Club to give him the opportunity to approach Hina Ebina and give him a chance to make a love confession to her.
But unfortunately she is not interested.

(For more information ➜ Love confession?)

Tamanawa

⇒⇒ 💖 ??

💖

?

?

Kaori Orimoto

Tamanawa and Kaori Orimoto belong to another school, the Kaihin Sougou High School.
There, Tamanawa is the president of the student council, which also includes Kaori Orimoto.

Both are a bit strange.
While Tamanawa has a weird way of talking, Kaori Orimoto is more of a tag-along and agrees with everything Tamanawa says as president of the student council.

The two have no feelings for each other, but Tamanawa certainly shows interest in her towards the end of the anime.
He wants to spend some free time with her, Kaori Orimoto, however, issues him a little brush-off.

Season 3, episode 7

Hayato Hayama

⇒⇒ 💖 ??

💖

?

?

Y?

Hayato Hayama is the most popular boy in Hachiman Hikigaya’s class.
He is nice and friendly to everyone, besides he is very sporty, good looking and always helps out his friends.
So it’s no wonder he’s surrounded by a lot of people.

However, he also has a cold side that he doesn’t show to everyone.
Hachiman Hikigaya is perhaps the only one who knows this side of him.
Hayato Hayama mentions to him that he is not the nice guy that everyone thinks him to be.

Hayato Hayama’s best friend is probably Kakeru Tobe.
He confides to Kakeru Tobe in one episode who he is in love with, but only reveals the first letter ‘Y’.

Season 2, episode 4

Yumiko_Miura
Yui Yuigahama
Yukino Yukinoshita
Haruno Yukinoshita

These four girls all have a ‘Y’ in their names. But who is Hayato Hayama in love with?

To Yumiko Miura, Hayato Hayama has a friendly relationship, although she has quite a crush on him.

With Yui Yuigahama, Hayato Hayama doesn’t really have much to do.

The most obvious would be his childhood friend Yukino Yukinoshita.
Their parents are longtime friends, and they grew up together.
So they spent a lot of time together in their childhood, however, something seems to have happened.
And since then, the two tend to keep their distance.
Unfortunately, the anime does not tell what happened.

The fourth in the list is Haruno Yukinoshita, Yukino Yukinoshita’s big sister.
Since her first name starts with ‘H’, I didn’t realize that she could also be a possible crush of Hayato Hayam.
I only became aware of this later, through a little research on the Internet.
Some people had already speculated and then pointed out that the “Y” could refer to her last name “Yukinoshita.”

Well, since it wasn’t clear to me, I didn’t particularly pay much attention to their relationship.
Therefore, I didn’t write down any useful information, and unfortunately I can’t go into further details now.
But if you still want to know who Hayato Hayam’s crush is,then the search engine of your choice will certainly help you out with this very question.
You will definitely find some interesting theories very quickly.

No

No

No

(There is only one very small scene where rumors are mentioned.
There, very briefly, a picture is shown where a student is having sex with a female student.
Both students are dressed and everything is quite censored, nevertheless, because of their position, it is very recognizable what they are doing at that moment.
When? Season 1, episode 4)

Romance facts

Yes – Harem-Style

The 2 main heroines, and a side heroine who is also highlighted significantly more in the anime:

Yukino Yukinoshita
Yui Yuigahama
Iroha Isshiki

The love triangle in ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru’ is mainly between Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama around Hachiman Hikigaya.

(For more informationon on:
Yukino Yukinoshita ➜ ‘Main Couple?’ — or —  Yui Yuigahama ➜ ‘Love Triangle?’ — and — My Opinion ➜ Characters)

However, Iroha Isshiki is not afraid to constantly approach and tease Hachiman Hikigaya, even though she is in love with Hayato Hayama.
She tries to toy with Hachiman Hikigaya, and keeps him as a second choice in case she is unsuccessful with Hayato Hayama.
So in my opinion, Iroha Isshiki is a terrible person and the worst of all the girls.

Moreover, she only pretends to be the silly girl, but she is manipulative, arrogant, only cares about her image at school and always tries to appear in a good light.
Fortunately, Hachiman Hikigaya is one of the smarter MCs and can see through Iroha Isshiki’s charade.

The side heroines who only get a few scenes in the anime and had little to no romance moments with Hachiman Hikigaya:

Saki Kawasaki
Kaori Orimoto
Meguri Shiromeguri
Hina Ebina
Yumiko Miura

Among all these side heroines, especially Saki Kawasaki is the one who still has the most contact with Hachiman Hikigaya, but unfortunately not as much as Iroha Isshiki.
I write ‘unfortunately’ because among all the girls in the anime, she was the best in my opinion.

Moreover, the chemistry between her and Hiki was just incredibly awesome.
To observe this you’ll just have to watch the first episode of season 3 to find out exactly what I mean.
Here you can see how perfectly Saki Kawasaki and Hachiman Hikigaya would fit together as a family.

Saki Kawasaki is so caring for her little sister, and also in general throughout the anime, you can see how she always goes out of her way to support her family and help out her siblings.
Just as Hachiman Hikigaya cares for his little sister (, even though the two siblings often tease each other. But it is obvious that they are very close to each other).

I have to admit, though, that I was a little worried at first when she was first introduced in the anime.
Because, Saki Kawasaki leaves the house in the evening, spends the night outside, and doesn’t come back until the next morning.
So, it was a little uncomfortable wondering where she would go.

But fortunately it turns out that she was just working in a bar to earn money for her family.
So here again it shows that Saki Kawasaki is a family person.

Saki Kawasaki and Hachiman Hikigaya have a few more short scenes together in the anime that are really cute.
But I don’t want to spoil them for you, except for one:

In the first season, episode 12 there is a school festival and Hachiman Hikigaya needs to go to the roof of the school.

In a later episode, a flashback from the school festival episode is shown.

Here you can see how Hachiman Hikigaya tries to find a way to the roof.
As he runs through the hallways of the school, he meets Saki Kawasaki and asks her how to get to the roof.
She explains him the way, he thanks her and continues running.

While he runs ahead, he gives a (unfortunately) not seriously meant “I love you, Kawasaki” and leaves Saki Kawasaki alone again.
Which makes her speechless at first, but then she blushes, gets completely nervous and gives a loud squeak 😄

Season 3, episode 1

Kaori Orimoto is an old female classmate and also ex-crush of Hachiman Hikigaya.
She is the reason why Hachiman Hikigaya has such a negative attitude towards nice girls.
In the first episode at about minute 6:00, you can namely see how he confesses his love to her and is then rejected by her.

Only much later in the anime do we learn more about this love confession.

Season 2, episode 3

Accordingly, Kaori Orimoto is properly introduced a little later, and only then does she have a couple of interactions with Hachiman Hikigaya.
There, in the beginning, she still makes fun of Hachiman Hikigaya and laughs at him.
(So she has quite unsympathetic traits, in my opinion.)
But later they become friends, more or less.

Kaori Orimoto also points out to Hachiman Hikigaya again at some point that it would be impossible for her to date him.
He replies then that he wouldn’t have asked for that either.

Season 2, episode 10

Meguri Shiromeguri is one school year above Hachiman Hikigaya.
The two barely have anything to do with each other in the anime.
It is only once briefly mentioned that Hachiman Hikigaya likes Meguri Shiromeguri (on a friendly basis).

Season 3, episode 9 (after the outro).

Hina Ebina is in the same class as Hachiman Hikigaya and a fujoshi (yaoi/boys love -fangirl).
Except for the episode with the fake love confession, the two also have barely anything to do with each other in the anime.

(For more information ➜ Love confession?)

Yumiko Miura is also in the same class as Hachiman Hikigaya and is the most popular girl in the class.
All her classmates stand around her desk most of the time during school breaks.

Yumiko Miura and Hachiman Hikigaya have next to nothing to do with each other in the anime.
And as I understood it, they don’t really like each other very much.

The side heroines who serve as support for Hachiman Hikigaya or for a few “laughs”:

Shizuka Hiratsuka
Haruno Yukinoshita
Komachi Hikigaya
Saika Totsuka

Shizuka Hiratsuka is Hachiman Hikigaya’s teacher.

She is a cool, smart and lovely woman who cares about her students and always has good advice for them.
Especially for Hachiman Hikigaya.
Hachiman Hikigaya often namely reaches a point where he doesn’t know what to do anymore.

But luckily Shizuka Hiratsuka is there to help him out of his predicament with her warm-hearted nature and a few wise words.
That’s why I think Hachiman Hikigaya sums it up pretty well when he says, “Someone should finally marry this woman.”
Sadly, she is namely still single (poor woman 🙁 )

I’m not surprised that many Oregairu fans obviously chose Shizuka Hiratsuka as the best heroine.

However, I would not go so far as to consider her a romantic partner for Hachiman Hikigaya.
For that, firstly, the age difference is too big and secondly, the chemistry between the two does also not fit for a romantic relationship.
It feels more like a mother-son relationship to me.

Haruno Yukinoshita is Yukino Yukinoshita’s big sister.

She is pretty much the opposite of Shizuka Hiratsuka.
Ice cold, very intelligent and also a little narcissistic.
She doesn’t really give Hachiman Hikigaya advices but rather warnings.
In addition, she tries again and again to hit the sore spot.

To be honest, I also found it very confusing to understand the relationship between her and her sister Yukino Yukinoshita.
First, she often says that she loves Yukino Yukinoshita after all and always takes care of her.
However, this always sounds quite sarcastic.

Almost at the end of the anime, Haruno Yukinoshita then says that she could not care less about her family and her sister.
But shortly after that, she starts to sound like she’s more worried about Yukino Yukinoshita, Hachiman Hikigaya, and Yui Yuigahama than she would admit to herself.
She advises Hachiman Hikigaya that he should make up his mind slowly and draw a line, instead of continuing to suppress the situation and lie to himself.

Because Haruno Yukinoshita can relate to this very well, as she has had done her own share of deceiving herself for 20 years.
Although it won’t be further explained what she means, one can however guess that she might have had a similar situation like the three of them.

So, I didn’t really understand the feelings that Haruno Yukinoshita has towards her little sister.

Is she trying to protect Yukino Yukinoshita?
Is she just being like that, to teach her little sister the hard way that life is no bed of roses?
Is she jealous of Yukino Yukinoshita?
Or does she really not care about her?

🤷‍♂️

Komachi Hikigaya is Hachiman Hikigaya’s little sister and also his better half.

She is nice, funny (the sarcasm with her big brother is just top notch) and gets along very well with Hachiman Hikigaya’s classmates.

I like the sister-brother relationship that the two have very much.
Very humorous and later also very heartwarming.

Except for a short time in the anime.
There Hachiman Hikigaya goes a little too far with his rude attitude.
But after that everything gets better.

Season 2, episode 3

Furthermore, she has a good sense of reading the atmosphere.

Aah yes, I wish there would be more characters like her.
Many characters often cause interruptions in anime.
But not Komachi Hikigaya, namely she does exactly the opposite.

She can read between the lines and thus ensures that her big brother can spend some alone time with a girl, for example, when the siblings are out shopping and run into one of the girls.
She then makes up an excuse and “suddenly” has to go somewhere else, thus creating a casual date.

I am very grateful for this charackter 😊

Saika Totsuka is Hachiman Hikigaya’s -> male <- classmate.

I write it that like that because he is portrayed very feminine in the anime and also behaves like that.
Therefore, he is often used for scenes where he hangs out with Hachiman Hikigaya to create silly trap gags with the two of them.
These then even cause a weird impression, making Hachiman Hikigaya look like he is into Saika Totsuka.

Aside from that, he helps Hachiman Hikigaya from time to time, but otherwise he doesn’t play much of a role in the anime and doesn’t appear that much later on.

Yes

Yui Yuigahama

♥ ⇒⇒⇒

Hachiman Hikigaya

Just as Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita didn’t get along at first, he doesn’t really have it easy with Yui Yuigahama at first either.
Or rather, that’s what Yui Yuigahama wants us to believe.
Because in reality, she’s just pretending to be so bitchy.
She is namely in love with Hachiman Hikigaya, and you can see that right at the end of the first episode.

And at some point it is also explained why she fell in love with Hachiman Hikigaya.

Season 1, episode 4

Hachiman Hikigaya saved a dog that just ran into the street and was almost hit by a car.
However, that went a bit wrong.
He indeed managed to save the dog, but was hospitalized for a short time afterwards because he broke his leg in the process.

He slightly forgot about this accident, and especially who the dog belonged to.
The dog namely belonged to Yui Yuigahama, and when she was walking the dog, this accident happened.

Yui Yuigahama is of course very grateful that Hachiman Hikigaya risked his life for her dog. But not only that.
This act then put Hachiman Hikigaya in a more positive light in the eyes of Yui Yuigahama, as she tends to know Hachiman Hikigaya as a totally negative guy.

This is followed, of course, first of all by her thanking Hachiman Hikigaya, and thus coming closer to him and getting to know him better.
(Even if it works rather poorly at the beginning, because Hachiman Hikigaya doesn’t like nice girls.)

So, throughout the whole anime, we very often see Yui Yuigahama trying to get closer to Hachiman Hikigaya and passively letting him understand that she has feelings for him and wants to be with him.

No, unfortunately not.
In the end, all her efforts remain in vain.
All her attempts are either rejected or not even noticed.

Yumiko Miura

Hayato Hayama

Iroha Isshiki

Yumiko Miura and Iroha Isshiki are the most popular students in their classes.
And both are in love with the popular classmate Hayato Hayama.

However, while Yumiko Miura gets involved with Hayato Hayama on a friendly basis and keeps her distance, Iroha Isshiki takes a slightly more aggressive approach.
But to their regret, Hayato Hayama has no interest in the two.

Is he in love with someone else?

(For more information ➜ Couple/s ➜ Side couple 3)

Yes, but with an indirect kiss.

Yui Yuigahama and Hachiman Hikigaya.

Hachiman Hikigaya

Yui Yuigahama and Hachiman Hikigaya are standing at a lucky well.
Yui Yuigahama drinks from a ladle and passes it to Hachiman Hikigaya.
But he stops her because the ladle has already been used by Yui Yuigahama.

Season 2, episode 1

Yes

Yui Yuigahama is about to tell Hachiman Hikigaya something important.

She is briefly interrupted by the ringing of her cell phone.
However, she does not let this bother her and continues with what she wanted to say, only this time Hachiman Hikigaya stops her.

Season 1, episode 9

Kakeru Tobe is about to make a love confession to Hina Ebina.

However, Hachiman Hikigaya suddenly intervenes, and makes a love confession to Hina Ebina….
(For more information ➜ Love confession)

Season 2, episode 2

Yes

There is a short flashback in the very first episode, of Hachiman Hikigaya’s past, which shows him making a love confession to a girl at school.

Hachiman Hikigaya gets rejected.
This event leads him to develop a negative attitude towards nice girls.

Only later, in season 2, it will be revealed to whom Hachiman Hikigaya made the love confession, namely it was Kaori Orimoto.

Yui Yuigahama wants to make Hachiman Hikigaya a Love confession.

As mentioned in the spoiler ‘Interruption at -> Love confession’, Yui Yuigahama is about to tell Hachiman Hikigaya something important.
However, she is stopped by Hachiman Hikigaya.

To me, it seemed like she was about to make a love confession.
And since Hachiman Hikigaya stops her immediately and does not let her continue talking, he passively rejects her, seen in this light.

Therefore, I consider this scene rather as a passive love confession by Yui Yuigahama.

Season 1, episode 9

Kakeru Tobe is about to make a love confession to Hina Ebina.
However, Hachiman Hikigaya suddenly intervenes, and makes a love confession to Hina Ebina.

Hina Ebina asks the Service-Club for help.
She says that she would like to have it that way, that nothing in the friend group changes and that it should stay the way it is.

But, what Hina Ebina actually means by that is, that they have to prevent Kakeru Tobe’s love confession to her.
She doesn’t want a relationship with him.

However, Hachiman Hikigaya does not understand this until much later, when Yumiko Miura and Hayato Hayama bring it to his attention.
So he has to come up with a “peaceful” solution.

Thus, when the time comes, Hachiman Hikigaya quickly makes a fake love confession to Hina Ebina, while Kakeru Tobe is about to make a real love confession to her.

Following this, she rejects Hachiman Hikigaya and Kakeru Tobe, with the excuse that she does not want a relationship at the moment, and runs away.
Kakeru Tobe is then certainly a bit confused, but takes it rather calmly.

It is enough for him to be friends with her for the time being, since she says that she does not want a relationship “at the moment” and hopes that it might work out sometime in the future eventually.
(However, we will never know when, because there is no mention of this scene or the relationship between Kakeru Tobe and Hina Ebina ever again.)

The real reason why she doesn’t want to have a relationship with Kakeru Tobe (or with anyone at all)?
Um, I didn’t really understand that.

Later Hina Ebina namely thanks Hachiman Hikigaya for his help, and confided in him why she really doesn’t want to have a relationship.
Her explanation is that if she were to date someone right now, there is no way it would last long, because she is rotten to the core.

Are you as confused as I am? Then wait, because there is more.
She goes on to say that she likes her current self and the way things are.
That’s why she hates herself…. and walks off.

Season 2, episode 1-2

Iroha Isshiki makes a love confession to Hayato Hayama.

We see the love confession from the perspective of Hachiman Hikigaya during fireworks.
We don’t hear anything about the love confession, but we can guess it, because afterwards Iroha Isshiki runs away crying.

Season 2, episode 9

Only at the beginning of the next episode, it is then properly clarified that it was a love confession and that Iroha Isshiki was rejected by Hayato Hayama.

Hachiman Hikigaya makes a love confession to Yukino Yukinoshita.

On a bridge, both stop and talk for a while.
After a long back and forth and much discussion, the two finally express themselves until they reveal their feelings for each other.
In the end, they embrace and are finally together.

Season 3, episode 11

One episode later, Yukino Yukinoshita also manages to sincerely confess her love to Hachiman Hikigaya, but then runs away because she is too embarrassed.

Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita.

Season 3, episode 11

Yes

No, I wouldn’t see it that way.

Although Hachiman Hikigaya often does meet up with the other girls, this is first of all on purpose because the anime has a harem built in.
So that almost every girl will be shown together with Hachiman Hikigaya sometime, in order for people to choose their best girl.

And secondly, Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita are rather distant during almost the entire anime and you don’t really can tell that there are feelings between the two.

Romantic happy ending (and also a little bit bittersweet)

Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita finally go on a date as a couple.
They dress up and act like a couple… or rather, they try their best.
They are certainly having difficulties, but after all, this is still the beginning phase of their romantic relationship.

Since there was a love triangle involved, Yui Yuigahama unfortunately lost the race.
Possibly, her friendship with Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita will not be the same as it was at the beginning of the anime.

Nevertheless, Yui Yuigahama still wants to remain friends.
Yui Yuigahama does not give up her best friend Yukino Yukinoshita and her crush Hachiman Hikigaya.
And to keep that friendship going, she visits the Service-Club under the pretext of needing advice.

Yui Yuigahama: “My crush seems to have a girlfriend, and the girlfriend is my best friend.
Yet I want to be her friend forever. What should I do?”

With this excuse, she can thus continue to be friends with the two and spend time together.

(The Service-Club now consists of: Hachiman Hikigaya, Yukino Yukinoshita, Komachi Hikigaya and Iroha Isshiki.)

My opinion

Moments:

‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru.’ or also known as ‘Oregairu’, is a very popular romantic comedy.
The last season was eagerly awaited by many fans.
And I, too, first waited until the final season aired so I could watch it in one sitting.

Sooo, Romantic Comedy….

Well, maybe the first season, but from season 2 on, the romance and comedy pretty much goes down the drain.
The anime has some funny and romantic moments every now and then in the first season.
But after season 1, the anime starts to become more dramatic, the comedy becomes less frequent and the romance atmosphere gets kind of ruined.

  • First of all, the main character himself.
Hachiman Hikigaya still doesn’t make any character development at the beginning of the second season, and is even worse than before.
(A little later, however, this fortunately changes.)
  • The dramatic music, which in some places makes no sense or even overdramatizes some scenes.
  • Side couple 1, which doesn’t come together and was just exploited for drama.
And after all the Drama, there was no further development to their relationship to see or even any mention.
  • From season 3 on, things get a bit better, though the drama surrounding the love triangle is intesivized again to create further sad moments.
  • Main couple makes little to no further development (even distances themselves more), until the end finally comes.

Otherwise, most of the time the anime is more about Hachiman Hikigaya’s everyday life and how he tries to solve problems for his fellow students.
Sometimes in his harsh way and sometimes in an intelligent way.

Animation:

The animation of ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru.’ has changed every season.

The first season was rather mediocre.
Season 2 was better, however I found a few movements a bit unnatural.
In the third season, the animation was more fluid and detailed and I really liked it.

Characters:

Hachiman Hikigaya:

Hachiman Hikigaya has a certain character in which many can probably recognize themselves.
And I too must admit that at the beginning of the anime I could empathize very well with some of his points of view, because I have experienced some things myself.

He had many negative experiences in his childhood, both at school and in love.
Due to all the setbacks he faced, he decided to retreat and avoid people.

Hachiman Hikigaya prefers to stay in the background and analyze his surroundings and the people around him, which has given him a lot of knowledge about human nature.

Moreover, he has developed a cold and rotten personality and when he says or does something that people don’t like, he doesn’t care what they think of him.

Now, at the beginning of the anime, Hachiman Hikigaya is put into the Service-Club, thanks to his teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka.
There he meets Yukino Yukinoshita, and a bet is proposed.

“Whoever helps the most people (or rather, fellow students) wins the bet.”
And despite the fact that he wanted to avoid people, he still agrees to this bet.

Thanks to his knowledge of human nature and his ability to come up with plans, Hachiman Hikigaya actually manages to help the students and solve their problems.

However, most of the time he gets the short end of the stick, because he solves the problems in a not so nice way and then he is considered the ‘asshole of the school’, but since he doesn’t care, it doesn’t bother him.

Nevertheless, his indifferent and heartless nature can get quite annoying in the long run, because sometimes he exaggerates a bit.
At a certain point in the anime, he namely goes too far.

He has a quarrel with Yukino Yukinoshita and also with his sister.
That’s when I just thought to myself, “Okay drama queen, take it down a notch and make a move towards positivity.”
So Hachiman Hikigaya slowly required a character development, because it was starting to get dull.

And that’s exactly what finally happens a few episodes later.
He speaks up and reconciles with his sister and Yukino Yukinoshita.
After that, he generally tries to be more positive and solve problems in a nicer way.

Unfortunately, it takes a while until Hachiman Hikigaya gets his sense for love, and even longer until he dares to draw a conclusion and decides for one of the two girls.
Or more precisely, to confess his love to the girl he is in love with.

Yukino Yukinoshita:

Yukino Yukinoshita is similar to Hachiman Hikigaya.
She also had a difficult childhood and has retreated because of it.

Unfortunately, not much is told about her childhood in the anime, and in general I didn’t really understand what kind of problems she has and why she is so distant to her family.

She is very intelligent, very direct and not afraid to ice-coldly speak her mind.
That’s why her fellow students call her “ice princess”.

She does have her moments once in a while where she is nice or seems a bit blunt, but other than that she always keeps her distance, even from Hachiman Hikigaya and Yui Yuigahama.
It takes a longer time at first, until Yukino Yukinoshita warms up a bit, and she can get involved with other people.

Yui Yuigahama:

Yui Yuigahama, unlike Yukino Yukinoshita and Hachiman Hikigaya, is a much friendlier person and also has a circle of friends at school.
She is always in a good mood, and even when she isn’t, she still shows her smile.

In the beginning she is also rather shy and a tag-along.
Therefore, she tries not to cause problems or get into confrontations.

But Yui Yuigahama is not like Yukino Yukinoshita and Hachiman Hikigaya.
During the course of the anime, namely, she gets much more character development a and eventually has more confidence.

About the other characters, I have written a little in several spoilers.
Here I have only described the three main characters in more detail.

Ending:

‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru’ ends with a romantic happy ending.

The anime really does a great job of showing how Hachiman Hikigaya and Yui Yuigahama or Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita interact with each other.
You are constantly thinking about who will win and who will lose this love race.

Well, I mean, from about the middle of season 2, it’s pretty obvious who’s going to win in the end.

But then there are those moments that give a little bit of hope that the other girl might win after all.
This was, at least for me, the only reason why I still forced myself to watch “Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru” until the end.

Which brings me to my next point.

So, did the ending satisfy me?

Now… it was definitely a sweet ending for the main couple.
And I’m satisfied that a couple came together at all in the end.

But am I satisfied about who got together?

In a nutshell, no.

Now just considering the anime and its love triangle:
In my opinion, Yui Yuigahama should have gotten together with Hachiman Hikigaya, and not Yukino Yukinoshita.

Why Yui Yuigahama?

From the beginning to the end of the anime, Yui Yuigahama puts a lot of effort into getting closer to Hachiman Hikigaya.

Everything starts when she asks the Service-Club (Yukino Yukinoshita and Hachiman Hikigaya) to help her bake cookies.
In the process, she becomes friends with them, and also joins the Service-Club.
She tries her best to win Yukino Yukinoshita as her best friend.
And also to get closer to her crush, Hachiman Hikigaya.

But since Yukino Yukinoshita and Hachiman Hikigaya tend to keep their distance, her attempts always remain unsuccessful.
Later, Yui Yuigahama even gives strong passive remarks and hints to Hachiman Hikigaya to let him be aware of her feelings towards him.
So she is not easily stopped by the distancing.

Unfortunately, however, all her efforts are in vain.
Because, either Hachiman Hikigaya vehemently keeps his distance to her, doesn’t even give her a chance to get close to him, or he always ditches her.
In the end, she gets the short end of the stick, and you often see her crying.

Too bad that Yui Yuigahama didn’t win in the end.
But she’s one of those heroines who, oddly enough, never win in most of the love triangle anime I’ve seen so far.
In fact, it’s often the case that really lovely and kind heroines, like Yui Yuigahama, do their best to be there for the main character and try very hard to get closer to him.
But in the end all this is just for nothing and they always lose.

Relationship with the family?

Warm welcome.

Yui Yuigahama at some point becomes friends rather quickly with Hachiman Hikigaya’s sister, Komachi Hikigaya.
And Hachiman Hikigaya also eventually gets to know Yui Yuigahama’s mother.
There aren’t that many scenes, but when there are, they are very warm-hearted.

Here, too, it all starts because of the Service-Club.
Hachiman Hikigaya namely is sort of forced to join the Service-Club, where only Yukino Yukinoshita is then located.
Thereby, both remain distant and cold to each other.
Occasionally Hachiman Hikigaya tries to befriend her, but Yukino Yukinoshita is not interested.

And also during the whole anime Yukino Yukinoshita doesn’t make much of an effort.
She constantly stays distant from Hachiman Hikigaya and doesn’t even try to get close to him, on the contrary, she even remains quite cold towards him.

Then one time she had the chance to give him her Valentine’s chocolate, but she didn’t dare.
The next day she just casually placed the chocolate in a plate and shared it with the Service-Club.

Unfortunately, it’s only at the end of the anime that you finally see her from her good side, and you realize for once that Yukino Yukinoshita cares about her relationship with Hachiman Hikigaya.

Relationship with the family?

Very cold and distant welcome.

Yukino Yukinoshita doesn’t really have much to do with Hachiman Hikigaya’s sister, Komachi Hikigaya, in the anime.

Yukino Yukinoshita’s father may not be introduced to Hachiman Hikigaya (and us) in the anime, but Hachiman Hikigaya does get to know Yukino Yukinoshita’s mother more properly in season 3.
And not in a really pleasant way either, because there’s a conflict over a prom.

While Yukino Yukinoshita’s mother wants to cancel the prom, Hachiman Hikigaya intends to try to make the prom happen no matter what.
After some back and forth, Hachiman Hikigaya was able to prevail, thus earning a few plus points with her as well.
However, she is not that easily to impress, which means that he will probably have to prove himself to her more often.
So having her as a future mother-in-law could be pretty tough for him in the long run.

Also with Yukino Yukinoshita’s sister, Haruno Yukinoshita, Hachiman Hikigaya does not really have it easy.
(For more information ➜ Harem? ➜ The support heroines? ➜ Haruno Yukinoshita)

So, throughout the whole anime, Yui Yuigahama very often tries to get closer to Hachiman Hikigaya and makes him understand that she has feelings for him and wants to be with him.
Meanwhile, Yukino Yukinoshita just keeps her distance from him every now and then.
And as for Hachiman Hikigaya’s, you can actually predict pretty early on who his heart beats for.

Nevertheless, unfortunately, the typical love triangle drama trope is being used here.
And this one will be really dragged out very long.

Well, those who have read my Taboo Facts probably know what I think about this kind of love triangle drama.
But since the love triangle drama was not so strongly represented during the whole anime, I turned a blind eye.
Besides, I found the ending quite sweet after all.

However, ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru’ is a good example by which I can describe quite well what I mean by the term love triangle drama:

Throughout the entire anime, there is a constant switching between Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama for Hachiman Hikigaya, in order to build up the emotions in the viewer, so that it gets really heavy sentimental in the last episodes.

And so that’s what ultimately happens in the end.

In the last episodes of the season 3, it is shown again and again how much Yui Yuigahama tries to get closer to Hachiman Hikigaya in order to win his heart.
But it just doesn’t work out, she keeps walking out as the loser and only hurts herself in the process more and more.
That’s why we then also often see her with tears in her eyes.

Eventually, she overcomes her sorrow and decides to distance herself somewhat from Hachiman Hikigaya and Yukino Yukinoshita.
However, the distancing doesn’t last long, as she ends up approaching them again in the end because she wants to continue being friends with them.
And she does that in the final scene in a very unusual way….

Well, let’s just say it works in a fictional story and I think it’s a good way to conclude ‘ Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru’.

But imagine this in real life.
“Hey, you’re dating my crush, but let’s still be best friends.”
Your best friend comes to you and tells you that, in front of your girlfriend/boyfriend.
(Because that’s what Yui Yuigahama practically does.)

First of all, it would probably make you feel uncomfortable.

And secondly, when YOU are the single friend, and have to watch your best friend and his girlfriend/her boyfriend (which is your crush) being all romantic with each other, is not very amusing and hurts.

I’m not saying the friendship wouldn’t work, but it could possibly be really painful.
And if that’s the case and you can’t find a solution, it can really make you sick in the long run.

I know what I’m talking about. I’ve heard many stories about being the third wheel.
I also know some people myself who have been in this situation.

And of course, I too was one of those in my younger years, and it wasn’t pleasant at all, until at some point I managed to distance myself somehow.

Now, I’m not telling you what you should do.
It’s just a little bit of my life experience that I wanted to pass on to you, and my opinion on why I think the final scene wouldn’t work so easily in real life.

But regarding a fictional story, well, like I said, I think it’s a good way to conclude it that way.

((This is a spoiler that I quickly added here at short notice, because I found the news too late.))

Actually, I was really hoping for an OVA.
One with an alternate ending that shows Yui Yuigahama as the winner.
And just when I was almost done with this post, I read a news about another OVA.

At first I was very pleased, but then when I read the news more thoroughly, my hope was just destroyed.
Because the next OVA picks up where season 3 left off.
I don’t know much about it yet, but what I do know is that the love triangle drama continues.

So dull… 😩

So what love triangle anime do is, starting the so-called waifu war, to fire up the fanbase and create more hype.
One is for TeamWaifuA and the other is for TeamWaifuB.

It’s one of the most annoying things that a love triangle can do.
But, more hype = more people who will watch, and more people = more money.
It’s not about telling a story anymore, it’s about money.
Oh, and drama, of course. People love drama.

So in the end you have the lucky winner and the girl whose heart got broken.

One is happy, while the other is sad.
And my feelings are then divided in two.
Should I be happy about it now or sad?
It just doesn’t feel right to me.

That’s why I think it ruins the romantic atmosphere.
All the drama and emotional confusion just drags down the romantic part for me.
It’s not wholesome and heartwarming at all, and I refuse to see this as a romance anime, more like a soap opera with average love drama.

(It gets even worse when 2 girls are not enough and the creators keep adding new girls to create even more waifuwar, hype and drama.)
(And the very worst scenario would be if the creators don’t let anyone win or simply opt for an open ending.)

A solution to this problem would be, for example:

  • To give at least the girl who lost, some hope for someone new.
Give her some time to get over her old crush and let her meet someone new.
Or an old friend that she overlooked because she was so blinded by love for her old crush.
To thus make her realize that there is hope for her to be happy.
  • Or maybe just make an additional OVA, with an ending where the girl who lost wins.

Episode Rating:

I liked season 1, episode 9 the best (except the ending).
And of course season 3, episode 10 and 11

The whole season 2 I found very bad in general.
Especially episodes 2, 3, 8 and 13, which I found too overdramatic.

Otherwise, as already mentioned above, it always shifts between Hachiman Hikigaya’s everyday life, episodes with rather little or no romance, and a little too much love triangle drama towards the end.

General side notes:

1. I have not read the Light Novel of ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru.’.

2. There is also a Visuel Novell for PS Vita, divided into two parts.
Unfortunately there are no official translations or fan translations available.

Actualy yes, I found some videos on Youtube, witch aren’t of high quality though.
Therefore I hope that there will be a proper translation soon.

It would be cool to see the routes from the other girls, like for example Saki Kawasaki (my favorite).
Or even Yumiko Miura’s route, which has nothing to do with Hachiman Hikigaya in the anime, but would be interesting to see.

OVA 3 side note:

Sooo, I just discovered this after writing the post, but apparently there is a contnuation of the Light Novel called ‘Shin’.
There is even a teaser for the OVA that shows two minutes of ‘Shin’.

The ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan OVA’ will probably take place after ‘Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan’.

In addition, there is a rumor about a new project called ‘Ketsu’, which means something like “conclusion”.
Other than that, there is no real information about the project so far.
I will update the post as soon as there is more information or the OVA has been released.
