General facts

Hana Uzaki

Shinichi Sakurai

Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki know each other from middle school.
They only ever saw each other at the swimming club, as Shinichi Sakurai was a year above Hana Uzaki.
He taught her how to swim and always practiced with her.

After Shinichi Sakurai graduated from middle school, he went to university.
And a year later, Hana Uzaki also went to university, namely the same one that Shinichi Sakurai goes to.

Thus they meet again, but they remain distant at first.
Hana Uzaki observes Shinichi Sakurai for a whole year and notices that Shinichi Sakurai has no friends and is always just bumming around.

So she decides to keep Shinichi Sakurai company in order to end his hermit student life.

Ami Asai

Itsuhito Sakaki

Ami Asai and Itsuhito Sakaki go to the same university as Hana Uzaki and Shinichi Sakurai, but are only a year ahead of them.
When they meet, however, they are initially rivals.

While Ami Asai just wants to watch the two of them blossom naturally, Itsuhito Sakaki wants to intervene to actually give the two of them a chance to get closer by planning activities and trips.

Thus they are at war with each other at first.
But when they realize that they both want the same result and only want to see Hana Uzaki and Shinichi Sakurai together, they work together.

From a romantic point of view, I haven’t noticed anything that could lead to that between the two of them.

Itsuhito Sakaki is more of a little womanizer.
He’s always on the go, whether on parties or traveling.

Ami Asai, on the other hand, is a little strange.
She likes to watch/stalk people and has a muscle fetish.

That’s why she admires Shinichi Sakurai and also Itsuhito Sakaki muscles so much.
(But it doesn’t go beyond that!)

Season 2, Episode 4

No

No, that’s not really worth mentioning.

Right at the beginning of the first episode, when Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki briefly meet, there is a time jump of a whole year.

In this one, you only see how she observes him in the four different seasons and what he does during his year at university, namely just bumming around.
Hana Uzaki wants Shinichi Sakurai to get out of his hermit lifestyle, so in the end she decides to hang out with him.

Yes, fanservice – weak

I had actually suspected that there would be extreme fanservice.
But fortunately that is kept to a reasonable level.

Of course, the fanservice moments are mainly about Hana Uzaki’s enormous bust size

And needless to say, there are also the usual beach and onsen episodes.

Beach episode: Season 1, Episode 6

Onsen episode: Season 1, Episode 10

Swimming pool episode: Season 2, Episode 9

Shinichi Sakurai

Ami Asai is a school year above Shinichi Sakurai, and they also work together at her father’s café.

She’s not in love with Shinichi Sakurai!
However, she’s totally into his body … because she has a muscle fetish, but that’s all.

Ami Asai is just weird, in her special and lovely way xD
She also contributes a lot to Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki becoming a relationship.

Yes

Shinichi Sakurai

Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki experience the first sunrise of the new year together at the shrine.
In his thoughts, he confidently wants to tell Hana Uzaki that he loves her.

He takes her hand…., but then withdraws from telling her.

Instead, he asks her if she’s coming back to hang out with him.
She grins contentedly from ear to ear and agrees because she wants to have fun with him again all year round.

Season 2, Episode 13

No, not yet.
However, I think it’s extremely stupid that it wasn’t shown in the anime anymore, because it would have only taken one or two more episodes.

So if you want to know what happens after you’ve seen the anime, you can continue reading from chapter 70 onwards.
After just a few chapters, everything becomes clearer.

Shinichi Sakurai confesses to Hana Uzaki that he loves her.

Chapter 72

Chapter 73

(For more information ➜ Will the couple stay together?)

Yes, according to the current state of the manga, Shinichi Sakurai asks Hana Uzaki to marry him.
(This happens right before the two have sex together for the first time… yep)

Chapter 106

No

Yes

Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki get drunk from time to time, and occasionally overdrink.
In the process, certain things sometimes happen… which are forgotten the next day due to their blackout.

Hana Uzaki is visiting Shinichi Sakurai and plans to get him drunk.

When he is drunk, he dozes off and says “I love you…” .
This shocks Hana Uzaki and she immediately shoves 2 cans of beer down her throat.
Shinichi Sakurai ends the sentence with “… for your cooking skills.” .

I’m not quite sure if she heard the second part of the sentence.
However, the next day, Hana Uzaki only remembers the first part, while Shinichi Sakurai remembers nothing at all.

Season 1, Episode 12

The second time, there is a Christmas dinner at the Uzaki house.
Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki get drunk again.

When the evening ends, Hana Uzaki and her father accompany Shinichi Sakurai home because he is too drunk.
Hana Uzaki also takes him upstairs to his apartment and prepares his bed.

Then Shinichi Sakurai topples over and falls onto the bed with Hana Uzaki, landing on top of her.
He sways and stares at her, then leans very close to her… and then falls unconscious to the side onto his pillow and immediately falls asleep.
(I don’t know if that was supposed to be a kiss, I doubt it 🤔)

Hana Uzaki was initially taken by surprise at the moment, but lay there calmly and expectantly.
But she pulled herself together, covered Shinichi Sakurai and then went home with a red head.

The next day, Shinichi Sakurai tells Sakurai that he had another blackout and can’t remember anything, …. which he later admits to himself is a lie.

Season 2, Episode 13

My opinion

Moments:

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!‘ is a comedy series that follows the relationship between the quiet Shinichi Sakurai and his lively, pushy classmate Hana Uzaki.
Hana Uzaki is determined to spice up Shinichi Sakurai’s dull life with her cheerful antics, leading to plenty of chaotic and funny situations.
But beneath all the teasing lies the question: can genuine feelings emerge from all this chaos?

The relationship between Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki is a constant rollercoaster – but without much progress.
Hana Uzaki frequently teases Shinichi Sakurai, puts him in embarrassing situations, and often sabotages her own romantic attempts.
Meanwhile, Shinichi Sakurai keeps his distance whenever things start to get even slightly emotional, constantly cooling down any tension.

There are hardly any truly romantic moments.
Instead, comedy and chaos take center stage as both characters refuse to acknowledge their feelings for one another.
Hana Uzaki does try to push things forward occasionally, but she quickly ruins these moments by turning everything into a joke.
Shinichi Sakurai, on the other hand, stubbornly remains emotionally distant.

Compared to similar anime like Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san oder Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san this show lacks the subtle touch when it comes to romance.
The focus is far more on humor than emotional depth, which might disappoint fans hoping for a clear love story.
While there are some charming moments, the romance feels stuck in neutral.

Animation:

I found the animation pretty and it goes well with the anime.

Characters:

Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki:

Shinichi Sakurai is the calm, brooding type who just wants to be left alone.
With his serious expression, he often comes across as intimidating, especially to women, who tend to keep their distance.
But honestly? He just wants to chill, play games, and enjoy his peace and quiet—company isn’t really his thing.

Still, Shinichi Sakurai has a caring side.
When Hana Uzaki gets herself into trouble or gets hurt, he shows he genuinely cares, even if he doesn’t say it out loud.
And while he gets super flustered during romantic moments and immediately backs off, you can tell Hana Uzaki matters to him.

Oh, and let’s not forget—he’s athletic!
Thanks to his time in the swim club, he’s got a great physique—tall and muscular.
But that doesn’t stop him from being completely awkward in emotional situations.
Feelings? Yeah, he’s not great at dealing with those and finds it difficult to admit to himself what he actually wants.

Hana Uzaki is loud, lively, and loves nothing more than getting on Shinichi Sakurai’s nerves.
She’s the type who can’t sit still—always on the move, always coming up with new ways to tease Shinichi Sakurai.
Her favorite hobby? Putting him in embarrassing situations and laughing at his reactions.
And sometimes she can be really mean, hurtful and even aggressive.

But there’s more to her than just being a tease.
Hana Uzaki is actually pretty caring—though she doesn’t always show it.
She cooks for Shinichi Sakurai, looks after him when he’s sick, and makes sure he doesn’t completely disappear into his introverted shell.
She’s also great with kids, and her warm, kind side shines through in those moments when she’s not making fun of Shinichi Sakurai’s “creepy” stare.

And her feelings? Total chaos.
Hana Uzaki clearly likes Shinichi Sakurai, but even she seems unsure whether it’s just friendship or something more.
And whenever things start to get romantic, she cracks a joke or changes the subject—probably because she doesn’t know how to handle those moments.

So, a Duo of Opposites!
Shinichi Sakurai and Hana Uzaki couldn’t be more different.
He’s the quiet, reserved loner, while she’s loud, extroverted, and full of chaos.

Their relationship is a rollercoaster of jokes, awkward moments, and small romantic sparks that they keep sabotaging. But that’s what makes them so compelling—you just want to see when they’ll finally talk about their feelings and if their friendship will turn into something more.

Ending:

Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!‘ ends with an open (un)romantic ending, which perhaps works towards further seasons.
The eternal back and forth in the two seasons was sometimes very frustrating. And I had hoped for a better ending.

So I had no choice but to take a quick look at the manga and was very annoyed afterwards.
They should have just shown two or three more episodes and the ending would have been perfect. 😒
(For more information ➜ Love confession?)

Well, let’s see if there will be any more seasons.
Hoping it won’t be as frustrating, since I’ve already seen/read some good stuff in the manga.

Episode Rating:

On average, most of the episodes are rather mediocre in terms of romance.
Instead, the comedy and the more frustrating moments take center stage.

I would say the best episode was in Season 2, Episode 3.
In this episode with that particular trip, you notice the romantic atmosphere, and it probably fits the romance the best.

The most disappointing and unromantic moment was in the last scene of the last episode.
You really can’t let an anime end like that…

I would also like to definitely mention the penultimate episode.
It has nothing to do with romance, but just because of Shinichi Sakurai’s horrible father, my jaw dropped. 😦
